Softball Hosts Prairie View at Home

SAN ANTONIO- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team will host Prairie View A&M (PVAMU) at home for a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game starting at 12:30 p.m. This will be the first time the Cardinals see the Panthers this year, but the two have faced each other in 15 games in the all-time history.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET

  • UIW defeated PVAMU by a score of 19-6 on February 13, 2022.

  • The Cardinals scored nine runs in the first inning to make the match last until five innings.

  • Annie Gunther was credited for the win after only allowing one hit and striking out one on the 35 pitches she threw.

  • Ryleigh Mata and Avalon Sanchez had fantastic games combining for five hits, five runs, and five RBI's.

PVAMU (0-8)

Though the Panthers haven't won a game this season, they're used to adversity. After going 0-19 to start the season last year, PVAMU came back to win 20 games and capture the SWAC conference title. Head Coach Vernon Bland embarks on his twelfth season with the Panthers as the conference title favorites were chosen to repeat history and add another title to the books. PVAMU also added four of its players to the SWAC preseason all-conference teams.

UIW (5-6)

The Cardinals are coming off a tough loss at UTSA this past Tuesday. Coming into this matchup UIW is 5-6 after facing some of the toughest teams, however, the Cardinals are on track for a great season.

Leading the offense is sophomore Baylee Lemons. The Texas State transfer has proven to be a valuable addition to the Cardinals as she's batting .375, hitting two doubles, two home runs, and has brought in five runners to home plate. Lemons is also slugging .625 with her 12 hits. Giselle Villarreal has also been consistent so far. Batting .353 in her 34 at-bats, Villarreal has the second-highest percentage on the team.

Pitching wise, Aaliyah Garcia has been the go-to player for the Cardinals. With a record of 2-1, Garcia has pitched 24.2 innings and tallied up 22 strikeouts. She currently has the fourth most strikeouts in the conference. Madison Floyd has also been a knockout start for UIW. Her 3.75 era doesn't compliment the 18 strikeouts she's collected in her 18 innings pitched.
