SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team fell to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) in the final game on Sunday, 9-5, as the Cougars came away with a 2-1 series win.
Carson Rollins,
Micah Berens,
EJ Garcia, and
Seth Higdon all took to the mound for the Cardinals.
Tony DeJesus,
Sterling Sutcliffe, and
Jamey Richey went 2-for-4 on the day.
Jimmy De Leon,
Rey Mendoza,
Hernan Yanez, and
Alec Carr recorded a hit. Mendoza led the team in RBI's with two.
The Cougars started the game with a three RBI home run followed by an RBI single to left center for six hits in the inning to take an early 4-0 lead.
SIUE scored two more runs in the second and then scored on a wild pitch in the third. In the fourth, the Cougars led off with a homer to left field to bring the score to 8-0.
The Cardinals threatened for a big inning in the fifth with the bases loaded and no outs, however, a Cougar double play left UIW with one score off a ground out from
Grant Randall (8-1).
In the sixth, the Cougars tacked another run to the board (9-1).
SIUE's first baseman bobbled the ball, as Richey reached first to load the bases for pinch hitter Mendoza in the sixth inning. Mendoza came up big with a two-RBI single to left center to bring home Yanez and Carr (9-3). Sutcliffe then singled to right field to plate Richey and Mendoza crossed home on a wild pitch (9-5).
Neither team scored the remainder of the game as SIUE clinched the series, 2-1.
