SAN ANTONIO- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team will travel to Austin this weekend for the Texas Classic that spans from February 17-20. The Cardinals will begin the classic facing Loyola Chicago on Friday morning at 10 a.m.
Coming off a great performance at the Cardinal Classic, UIW will head into the tournament with a 3-2 record. Standing in fifth place in the Southland Conference standings, the Cardinals are showcasing their talents early on.
In addition to facing the Ramblers at the classic, UIW will see Nebraska Omaha and the nationally-ranked Texas Longhorns. This trio of teams will be tough competition to get the Cardinals ready for conference play starting in March.
FOLLOW THE GAMES
After finishing out the Cardinal Classic with three wins under the belt, the UIW is hungry for more. Leading the pack is Southland Preseason Team pick Ryleigh Mata. Mata is batting .500 over her total 16 at-bats she's taken so far. Following right behind her is catcher Avalon Sanchez, batting.462 in her 13 at bats. In those, she's hit two doubles and tallied up three RBI's.
Pitcher Aaliyah Garcia has been red hot for UIW as she heads into the weekend. Garcia has only allowed four hits in the two games she's played. Madison Floyd has also been on fire in the nine innings she's pitched. Already building up nine strikeouts, Floyd is on track for a great season. The Cardinal offense is one that's just getting started.
