Men’s Basketball Looks to Bounce Back from Two Close Losses

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team will be on the road for two games this week. They first will take on the McNeese Cowboys on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and then the Nicholls Colonels Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

FOLLOW ALONG

UIW fell to both Lamar and Houston Christian last week by less than 10 points but remained in sixth place in the Southland Conference with an 11-15 overall record and 5-8 in conference. Stephon Payne III had another double-double last week with 12 points and 10 rebounds on Thursday night and has the second-most blocks in the conference with 26 this season. Jonathan Cisse has continued to put up stellar stats, leading the team in points and holding the second-highest free throw percentage in the SLC, shooting around 87 percent from the line.

McNeese won both of their games last week moving into a tie for eighth place in the conference with a 4-8 SLC record, 7-19 overall. Chris Shumate is leading the team averaging a double-double with 12.8 points per game and 9.2 rebounds. The Cardinals were able to corral the star Cowboy holding him under his season averages to 18 points and seven rebounds the last time the two teams faced off.

The Colonels also won both of their games last week, moving them up to third in the Southland. Nicholls has the second-best scoring margin in the Southland at +3.75, scoring an average 76.25 points per game and only allowing 72.5. Senior guard Caleb Huffman averaged 24 points per game last week on 59 percent shooting and was named the Southland Conference men's basketball player of the week. Similarly to the game against McNeese, UIW was able to shut down the star guard, only allowing Huffman to score 13 points in their 67-65 win over Nicholls.
