SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team held off the University of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC), defeating the Islanders (8-6) on Friday night at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. With the win, the Cardinals clinched the series heading into the finale.
 
Both Nixon Brannan and Jimmy De Leon went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
 
An RBI single from Roberto Gonzalez - his sixteenth consecutive game with a hit - put the Cardinals on the board first in the bottom of the fourth inning (1-0). The Islanders tied the game with a solo home run in the top of the fifth and followed with a two-RBI homer to take a 3-1 advantage.
 
Another Islander home run in the top of the sixth put TAMUCC ahead, 5-1. Wilson Ehrhardt crossed home in the bottom of the inning and Brannan blasted a solo homer to left field, cutting the score to 5-3. Daniel Calabrese singled up the middle to plate De Leon and end the inning down one run, 5-4.
 
Grant Smith dropped the ball between the shortstop and center field in the seventh frame to bring Alec Carr across home and level the game, 5-5. With the bases loaded, Brannon hit safely to bring home Smith and take back the lead. De Leon then belted a two-RBI single to right field as UIW took an 8-5 advantage.
 
The Islanders scored one run in the eighth inning, but the Cardinals held them off to win game two, 8-6.

For the safety of the student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans, no pets (leashed or unleashed), with the exception of service animals, are allowed at UIW Athletic events.

The Cardinals will celebrate senior day tomorrow, May 14. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CT with the senior ceremony following the game.
