SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's and women's fencing programs placed six student-athletes on the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) all-conference team. In addition to all-conference honors,
Julian Spier (first team) and
Rylie Rueda (second team) have advanced to the 2022 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championship.
Rodaina Ashraf-Gaafar also earned first team status, while
Maia Slowinski,
Jake Thayer and
Brendan Barber were also selected to the second team. Student-athletes who reached the individual championship bouts at the MPSF Championship and earned gold or silver medals were named to the first team, while those who earned bronze were named to the second team.
Following NCAA Regionals, Spier and Rueda are two of 144 competitors who will participate in the NCAA Fencing Championship hosted by Notre Dame University on March 24-27. Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After each round-robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places, and non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place. A live feed of semifinal and final bouts will be available at 12:30 p.m. CT on ESPN3 or the WatchESPN app. Semifinals and finals will air on ESPNU at 3:30 p.m. on March 30.
