SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team downed the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), 15-2, to sweep the Mavericks, 3-0 on the series, at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
Freshman
Reid Hensley (two) and
Roberto Gonzalez (one) led the Cardinals' offensive attack with three home runs.
Nixon Brannan had a three-hit day, while
Jacob Rosales and Hensley finished with three RBIs each.
With two outs in the first frame,
Hernan Yanez singled to right field; then Gonzalez belted an RBI homer over the left center wall for an early advantage (2-0).
Hensley hit his second career home run for the Cardinals in the second inning to bring the score to 3-0.
In the fourth,
Ridge Rogers was walked, stole second base and advanced to third on a ground out.
Alec Carr singled to shortstop and Rogers snuck in a run to take a 4-0 edge.
Gonzalez smacked the ball off the right center wall for a triple in the bottom of the fifth. Next at bat, Carr was walked then stole second base, putting runners on second and third.
Taylor Darden hit a sacrifice fly out to left field, bringing in Gonzalez to add another run to the board. Brannan then hit an RBI double to right center to make it 6-0.
UTA scored its first runs of the game in the seventh frame to cut the lead to 6-2.
Daniel Calabrese and
Warren Laster reached home on Maverick errors in the bottom of the seventh and the Cardinals' lead extended to 8-2. Hensley blasted another ball out of the park for his third home run of the series, bringing Rosales home with him to give UIW a 10-2 cushion.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Cardinals tacked on five runs to secure the 15-2 victory.
