SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team used a 21-0 run early in the first half to upset Southland Conference leader the University of New Orleans (UNO), 78-70. The Cardinals handed the Privateers their first conference loss of the season on Saturday afternoon in the McDermott Center.
 
UIW was led by Robert "RJ" Glasper's season-best performance, tallying 34 points. Brandon Swaby followed with a season high of his own, registering 19 points for the Cardinals.
 
Glasper's 24-point performance in the first 20 minutes led UIW to an 11-point lead in the first half. Swaby followed by registering eight points and remaining perfect from beyond the arc with two 3-pointers. The Cardinals started off strong with a 21-0 scoring run to push them ahead, 27-9, with seven minutes left in the first half. The Privateers came within 10 points, but UIW continued to push the ball to keep the 38-27 advantage heading into the halftime break.
 
The Cardinals continued their momentum into the second half with a quick four points to extend their lead to 42-28. The Privateers cut the lead to four points, 65-61, before Swaby got the steal and went downcourt for a fast-break layup to put the Cardinals back up by six. UNO continued to chip away at UIW's lead and came within one point, 69-68, but Glasper's three-point play out of a timeout put the Cardinals back up, 72-68. Swaby then got fouled on a defensive rebound and knocked down both free throws to extend the UIW lead to 76-70. Charlie Yoder topped off the night with the final two free throws to put the Cardinals ahead, 78-70, as they handed the Privateers their first loss of conference action.
 
UP NEXT
The Cardinals head back to Louisiana to take on the Colonels of Nicholls State University on Thursday, Feb. 10. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
