SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team celebrated its home opener with a 10-7 victory over South Dakota State University (SDSU) on Thursday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
Eight Cardinals recorded hits against the Jackrabbits.
Ridge Rogers and
Jimmy De Leon went 3-for-5 with two runs scored each. Rogers finished the day with two doubles.
DeLeon recorded three RBIs, while
Roberto Gonzalez notched two.
Warren Laster,
Alec Carr,
Hernan Yanez and Rogers all drove in one run apiece.
SDSU got a pair of runs on four hits in the top of the first to go up 2-0, but in the bottom of the second, De Leon stepped to the plate and hit a single out to left field to bring Rogers home (2-1).
Jacob Rosales doubled to right field and Laster singled to bring him home and tie the game up, 2-2. Rosales scored on an error to give the Cardinals a 3-2 advantage.
The Jackrabbits started off the third adding three runs to the board (5-3). SDSU scored once more in the top of the fourth to take a three-run lead (6-3).
UIW opened up the game in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded, Carr hit a one-run single to short stop. Gonzalez singled to left center to bring home
Nixon Brannan. Then, Yanez and Rogers hit back-to-back singles as the Cardinals took an 8-6 edge over the Jackrabbits.
In the top of the sixth, SDSU added another run to the board to come within one (8-7), but De Leon hit a two RBI single to left field as the Cardinals answered with a 10-7 lead.
Chandler David closed out the eighth with a 1-2-3 inning as UIW took the game, 10-7.
