Men’s and Women’s Basketball Open SLC Play at Commerce

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's and women's basketball teams open Southland Conference play with a doubleheader at Texas A&M University - Commerce on Saturday, December 31. The women play at 2 p.m. followed by the men at 4:30 p.m.

The UIW men's basketball team was picked to finish last in the Southland in the 2022-23 preseason poll but after winning the second most non-conference Division-1 games in school history, the Cardinals are currently sitting at fourth with a 6-7 record. The Cardinals ultimately fell in a close game to FIU last week, 79-74. UIW had four student-athletes score in double-figures against the Panthers, led by Jonathan Cisse who finished with 17 points.
 
In their first season competing at a Division I level, the Lions were picked to finish seventh in the SLC. The men have started the season 4-10 after losing to the University of Texas. Even though these teams have never faced off in conference play the all-time record between the two is 3-2 in favor of the Cardinals. However, the Lions took the last game in 2013 by a score of 86-84.
 
The UIW women's basketball team is 5-5 to end non-conference play following a tough slate to include three Big 12 programs in Baylor, TCU, and Texas Tech. The Cardinals picked up wins over UTSA, Our Lady of the Lake, Texas Lutheran, Schreiner, and Sul Ross State.
 
As a defensive team, UIW has held its opponent to an average of just 54.5 points per game. On the other side of the ball, Nina De Leon Negron continues to lead the team with 12 points per contest and adds 18 steals and 26 assists on the season. Destiny Terrell, Aliyah Collins, and Myra Bell all contribute seven points per game. Terrell is the leading rebounder, pulling down five per contest.
 
The Lions are 2-10 this season, heading into Saturday on a four-game losing streak. Dyani Robinson is carrying Commerce with 17 points per game. DesiRay Kernal is the leading rebounder with 7.4 per contest.
