SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team will be well represented this summer as 15 current UIW student-athletes compete across six summer baseball leagues in Texas, Virginia and California.
11 Cardinals are competing in the Five Tool Collegiate League. The league started in 2020 and played regionally across Texas – Premier Baseball of Texas in Tomball, Texas (Trey Triolo, Cole Beddingfield and Carson Rollins), the South Texas League (Shea Walker and Larry Westall), Houston area (Kaddin Mikulik, Braxton Gerek) and Austin/San Antonio areas (Colin Jackson and Jack Jaulfka). The league is a wooden bat league with an 18-game season and a single-elimination playoff that runs from May 24 to July 8.
Derek Saenz and Ryan Flores are competing in the Texas Collegiate League. The 44-game, wooden bat league runs from May 28 to August 1 with a double elimination playoff tournament following. The TCL allows collegiate players with remaining eligibility to showcase and improve their skills in a wholesome, minor league-type atmosphere. Saenz is on the pitching staff for the Brazos Valley Bombers, while Flores is a first baseman for the San Antonio Flying Chanclas. Saenz started in the season opener, going two innings, allowed one run, and struck out three batters in his only appearance so far. Through four games, Flores has two hits with six RBIs and four walks.
Ryan Guerra is competing in the Texas Coast Baseball League held in Corpus Christi, Texas. The TCBL is a 25-game league played from June 1 to July 2 including a double-elimination playoff. The league consists of collegiate players from all across the country from Division I, Division II, Division III, junior colleges and NAIA schools.
Steve Hayward is set to play in the Dallas Division of the Metro Summer Collegiate League, the league will play a 22-26 game schedule and be comprised of 26 teams with college players from all over the country. The MSCL has been in existence since 2012 and has established itself as one of the largest and premier collegiate leagues in the U.S.
Grant Smith is taking his talents to the California Collegiate League, playing for the Conejo Oaks. The CCL, founded in 1993, is a 10-team league that has a 30-game league schedule while teams have the option for additional 10-20 non-conference games from June 18 to August 1.
Jaren Warwick is pitching for the Woodstock River Bandits in the Valley Baseball League. The VBL, played in Virginia, is an 11-team league playing 42 games which started on June 1, and a playoff tournament wraps up the season in early August.
