Men's basketball signs Johnny Hughes III

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word head men's basketball coach, Carson Cunningham, announced the signing of 6-8 graduate transfer Johnny Hughes III for the upcoming 2021-22 season.

"Johnny is a tough and skilled hooper with heaps of experience and considerable lecture hall bonafides. We're thrilled to welcome him to Incarnate Word," Coach Cunningham said.

Hughes comes to UIW by way of the University of Mount Olive, where he earned first team All-Conference accolades for the Trojans this past season.  The Fayetteville, North Carolina native will soon earn his bachelor's degree in business management and plans to study in UIW's sport management master's program.

During the 2020-21 season, Hughes led the Trojans in scoring, averaging 18.1 points per game, and in rebounding, averaging 7.7 per game. He shot 51.0% (79-for-155) from the floor, including 43.8% (21-for-48) from the 3-point line. He also knocked down 79.8% (75-for-94) of his free throw attempts. The prior season as a junior at Mount Olive, he averaged 12.8 points per game and 7.2 rebounds.

The 6-8 forward is the son of Johnny Hughes Jr. and Hope Cogdell and has nine siblings.

"I'm excited to join UIW men's basketball on this wonderful journey. I believe Incarnate Word will help me develop as an individual, as an academic, and as a basketball player, and as I strive for success in my next step in life." Hughes III said.
