EL PASO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team leaves the friendly confines of H-E-B Field Friday as the Cardinals participate in the Orange and Blue Classic, hosted by the University of Texas-El Paso. Four teams are participating in the invitational, UTEP, No. 11 Arizona State, and Montana, over the course of two days, starting at 10 a.m. Friday and run through Saturday night.
.300 CLUB
The Cardinals have two hitting over .300 through the first six games of the season. Sophomore
Maddie Boldt leads UIW with a .357 batting average and also two doubles. Senior
Teanna Lucio follows behind Boldt with a .316 batting average and a perfect 3-3 stolen base record.
IMPROVED PLAY
UIW is currently on a two-game win streak, following its midweek doubleheader sweep of the University of Houston-Victoria. Freshman
Catarina Esteves is on a hot streak coming off the two wins. Esteves leads the team in RBIs with three after an impressive outing where she had three hits in six at-bats, aiding the Cardinals to their first wins of the season.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
- Arizona State, 12:30 p.m. Friday and 12:30 p.m. Saturday – The Sun Devils enter the Orange and Blue Classic with a 10-1 record and ranked 11th in Division I.
- Montana, 10:00 a.m. Saturday – So far in 2021, the Grizzlies are 2-8 with wins against Grand Canyon and Dixie State.
- UTEP, 5:30 p.m. Friday – The Miners enter the classic with a 2-6 record with two wins against Northern Colorado.
