Southland Conference cancels 2020 conference tournament

KATY, Texas – The Southland Conference has canceled the 2020 Hercules Tires Southland Conference Tournament effective immediately the league announced Thursday morning.

The seventh-seeded University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team was set to face the No. 6 seed Nicholls on Thursday in the first round of the tournament. This marked the first appearance in postseason for the Cardinals since joining the SLC.

In head coach Jeff Dow's first season at the helm of the women's basketball team, the Cardinals had their most successful season since becoming an NCAA Division I team in 2013-14. UIW punched its ticket into the postseason following the game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, becoming the sixth team to clinch a spot in the tournament.

The Cardinals finished the regular season with a 14-15 overall record and were 10-10 in Southland Conference play. UIW tied for sixth in the final SLC standings. This is the best record in the programs' brief Division I history and best since the 2012-13 campaign as a member of the Lone Star Conference.

The University of the Incarnate Word athletics department is following the procedures outlined by the institution and conference. For UIW procedures click HERE.
