Fourth Quarter Comeback Gives UIW Third Straight Win

COMMERCE, TX – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team moved its current winning streak to three games on Saturday afternoon with a 71-61 victory over East Texas A&M University inside The Field House.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • East Texas A&M opened the game with a three-pointer less than a minute into play and held a slight 7-5 edge with 6:24 remaining in the first quarter.
  • A jumper from junior Destiny Whitaker gave the Cardinals an 11-9 lead with 4:16 on the clock, which grew to a 19-13 advantage at the end of the first.
  • Junior Mallory McQuietor nailed a three-pointer late in the second period to give Incarnate Word its largest lead of the first half at 30-22, as UIW carried a 35-32 lead into intermission.
  • The Lions battled back to regain the lead, 46-45, with just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter.
  • Incarnate Word and East Texas A&M exchanged the lead five times across the final three minutes of the third quarter, with the Lions holding a 53-51 edge heading into the final frame.
  • Sophomore Brynn Lusby drained a jumper with 8:08 left in the game to give the Cardinals a lead they never gave up, building an advantage as large as 14 points, 71-57, on a layup from junior Raimi McCrary with two minutes and change remaining.
NOTES
  • The victory moved UIW to 13-13 overall and 11-8 in Southland Conference play.
  • Incarnate Word has now won four straight games over East Texas A&M in the series and owns a 12-4 record against the Lions dating back to the 2009-10 season.
  • Lusby led all players with 22 points, making 9-of-16 shots from the field in just 25 minutes of action off the bench.
  • McCrary followed with 16 points of her own, and senior Jorja Elliott finished with 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers for Incarnate Word.
