Synchro brings the heat to Florida Invitational, wins high point award

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of the Incarnate Word synchronized swimming team racked up 84 overall points to win the high point award at the Florida Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The Cardinals, in their first meet of the collegiate season, bested Stanford (81 points), host University of Florida (49 points) and Lindenwood (11 points).
 
Synchro routines are scored by judges, with scores weighted 30 percent by execution, 40 percent by artistic impression and 30 percent by difficulty.
 
CARDINALS IN FLORIDA
 
Trio:
Rebecca Barlow, Adora Kruger and Alexandra McGee took first in trio with a score of 78.6250. This trio swam to the high energy compilations of songs from Pat Benatar, Stevie Nicks and Heart.
 
The "Bollywood" trio of Juliana Damico, Greta Hampson and Natalia Vega scored a 76.0750 on the meet.
 
Duet:
The Cardinal pairing of Damico and Vega took a narrow second-place spot in duet for a score of 78.6750, swimming to strong flamenco and Spanish music.
 
Solo:
Vega snagged another silver in solo with music from Lizzo, placing just behind Stanford's Jacklyn Luu for a solo score of 78.9250.
 
Natalie LaGrone finished fourth for UIW with her Pink Floyd-inspired routine and a 75.1500.
 
Team:
UIW's red team, swimming to collegiate drumline music, took first in team by edging out Stanford with a score of 79.6250, while the black squad's Elvis-themed team routine capped out the podium for a third-place finishing score of 75.4500.
 
UP NEXT
The Cardinals quickly dive back into action as they travel to Mesa, Arizona, for the Collegiate Open on Feb. 14-15. This two-day meet is hosted by the University of Arizona and is set at the Mesa Skyline Aquatic Center with lap swim starting at 5 p.m. CT on Friday and 10:20 a.m. on Saturday.
