Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cardinals soar past Sul Ross 75-51

SAN ANTONIO – In a full team effort, with 12 on the roster contributing to the score, the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team cruised past Sul Ross, 75-51, on Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center.

UIW was first to get on the board off a pair of free throws made by Starr Omozee as well as a driving layup, to which Sul Ross responded to accordingly to tie the game 4-4 just three minutes into the game. That marked the last time the Lobos would tie up the score in the game.

Sophomore duo of Brittney Stafford and Destiny Jenkins lifted the Cardinals in the first quarter putting up seven and five points respectively, to give the squad a 20-11 lead.

UIW's efficient shooting in the second quarter at a rate of 47.4 percent from the field, 33.3 from 3-point range and 57.1 from the charity line was the momentum the team needed to build on its lead. A combination of sharp shooting and stable defense put the Cardinals ahead 44-24 at the break.

Freshman Jaaucklyn Moore, who added seven points in the sharpshooting second quarter, also made her mark in the third quarter. Her six points off a pair of three pointers in addition to ten points in the paint put up by the team and the Cardinals maintained their lead.

Despite Sul Ross outscoring UIW in the final quarter, 13-12, the lead was too much to overcome for the Lobos putting the Cardinals 2-2 on the season and 2-0 at home.

QUOTING COACH DOW
"It was a little bit of an uneven performance, but we were able to accomplish what we set out to do. We've stressed for the past week how important it was that we show improvement with both our offensive and defensive rebounding, so it was good to see we made strides in the right direction today on both ends. And we were able to finish with more assists (17) than turnovers (11) so not only did we do a good job of taking care of the ball, but also in finding the open teammate. We were able to play all thirteen players double figure minutes so that was good to see as well."

NOTABLES
  • Cardinals' stout 3-point defense held the Lobos to just 11.8 percent from beyond the arc, conceding just two made baskets from 3-point range.
  • UIW was well rounded against Sul Ross with 37 points coming from the bench.
  • The Cardinals snagged a season-high 13 steals and forcing the Lobos to turn the ball over 22 times. UIW turned the ball over just 11 times, the fewest of any game this season.
  • The team's 75 points are the most in a game since its 76-39 win over Northwestern State on Feb. 12, 2020 during the 2019-20 campaign.
  • Freshman Jaaucklyn Moore led the team with 15 points while Starr Omozee and Brittney Stafford also scored in double-figures at ten each.
