SUGARLAND, Texas -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team used a strong, come-from-behind effort to secure a 5-4 victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday afternoon at Constellation Field.
After UIW took the lead in the top of the eighth,
Andrew Morgan and the Cardinal defense retired the Islanders in order in both the eighth and ninth innings to clinch the win.
NOTABLES
- The Cardinals now have 37 wins on the season. This marks the most victories UIW has had since 2011.
- Ridge Rogers had a perfect 3-for-3 outing with a walk and two runs.
- Eddy Gonzalez chipped in two hits, two RBI, a run and a walk.
- Andrew Morgan earned the win, striking out five batters in 6.1 innings pitched.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Islanders plated a run in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead, but the Cardinals responded and went ahead, 2-1, in the top of the third when E. Gonzalez tripled to drive in Rogers before coming home on a wild pitch. The Islanders continued to battle and regained the lead (4-2) in the bottom of the frame.
The Cardinals scored a run in the fifth as
Antonio Valdez took advantage of another wild pitch to leave TAMUCC with a narrow, 4-3 advantage. UIW added a run in the sixth as
Michael Garza hit a RBI sacrifice fly to tie the game at 4-4.
UIW then took the lead in the top of the eighth when Rogers scored on a E. Gonzalez single to go up, 5-4, before Morgan and the defense secured the victory over the Islanders.
