Cardinals sweep doubleheader at Texas Southern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HOUSTON -- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team won both games of its doubleheader Tuesday against Texas Southern, in Houston. The Cardinals shut out the Tigers 6-0 in the first matchup of the afternoon and closed out the day with a 4-3 comeback win.

NOTABLES
  • Senior first baseman Hope Sobolewski went 3-8 on the day with a home run, six RBIs and two runs scored. She drove in the game-winning run in the seventh inning to secure the sweep for UIW.
  • Senior shortstop Angel Villanueva finished 3-7 with a double, a run and a stolen base.
  • Junior second baseman Emily Castro was efficient in the first game of the day, going 1-2 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Senior third baseman Shelby Neatherlin came up big for UIW in the second game, going 2-4 while driving in a game tying run in the seventh inning.
  • Freshman pitcher Renee Hoffman got the nod in the first game and tossed a complete-game shutout. She finished with 7.0 innings pitched, no runs allowed on five hits with one strikeout and picking up her second win of the season
  • It the first complete-game shutout of Hoffman's career.
  • Hoffman also pitched two innings in relief in the second game, allowing two runs on three hits. Because UIW came back to win in the top of the seventh, Hoffman actually picked up her second win of the day and third on the season.
  • Senior pitcher Jessica Rodriguez started the second game, throwing 5.0 innings with just one run surrendered on four hits with one strikeout

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1

UIW scored in the top of the second on a throwing error to take a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals scored two more in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Castro and an error on TSU that brought Jenna Bleiberg home to make it 3-0. In the top of the seventh, Sobolewski launched a three-run home run to extend UIW's lead, which it held on to for a 6-0 victory.

Game 2
Both teams were held scoreless up until the fifth inning, when UIW got on the board when Sam Wendel was caught stealing at second but Hailey Goins came home on the play to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. A base hit from Sobolewski in the top of the sixth doubled UIW's lead, but TSU roared back with a three-run inning to take a 3-2 advantage heading into the top of the seventh. A pair of RBI singles from Neatherlin and Sobolewski restored the Cardinal lead and UIW held on in the bottom of the seventh to win the game, 4-3.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals head to Austin on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. (CT) matchup against Texas.
