PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team secured a 14-3, seven-inning victory against Prairie View A&M on Tuesday afternoon at John W. Tankersley Field.
NOTABLES
- This victory puts UIW at 30 wins on the season This the first 30-win season UIW has had 2011.
- Sean Arnold extended his reached-base streak to 40 games. He led the team with a 3-for-5 outing, including five RBI, two runs, a double and a home run.
- Shea Gutierrez went 3-for-5 with three runs, a RBI and a double.
- Aaron Celestino (6-3) earned the win, striking out two batters in 3.0 innings pitched.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals opened scoring in the top of the first when Arnold scored on a wild pitch.
Ryan Flores then came home on an
Antonio Valdez RBI single and Gutierrez used a sacrifice fly to plate Valdez, giving the Cardinals the 3-0 advantage.
UIW lengthened their lead with a
Taylor Smith sacrifice fly in the second inning. The Cardinals took advantage of a Panther error, with Gutierrez coming home in the third inning to make the score 5-0.
The Panthers plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut UIW's lead to 5-2, but the Cardinals continued their offensive intensity in the fifth frame, adding five runs. A bases-loaded walk scored Gutierrez before Arnold blasted a grand slam, extending the lead to 10-2. The Panthers scored a run in the bottom of the frame to make the score 10-3.
UIW plated four runs in the top of the sixth --
Eddy Gonzalez hit an RBI single,
Lee Thomas recorded a sacrifice fly, and
Chance Medina and Arnold both smacked RBI doubles -- to secure the seven-inning, 14-3 victory.
