Baseball takes game one, 14-6, over Central Arkansas

SAN ANTONIO -- After an overnight delay in game one, the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team secured a 14-6, game one victory against Central Arkansas on Saturday afternoon at Daniel Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
 
NOTABLES
  • UIW tied its team single game record for home runs in a game (6). This is the first time the Cardinals have hit six home runs in a game since 2003.
  • Sean Arnold extended his reached-base streak to 41 games. He notched a hit, a walk and a RBI.
  • Taylor Smith had a perfect 5-for-5 outing with two runs, two RBI, a double and two home runs. This is Smith's fourth two home run game of the season.
  • Andrew Morgan earned the win, holding the Bears to two runs in 5.0 innings pitched.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals took flight in the bottom of the first. Ryan Flores hit a solo home run to left field to gain an early 1-0 lead. UIW extended its advantage in the bottom of the second. First, Ryan Gonzalez and Lee Thomas scored on a Ridge Rogers single. Rogers then came home as Sean Arnold grounded out to shortstop, making the score 4-0.
 
Three home runs in the third and fourth innings -- a solo shot by Taylor Smith, a solo jack by Lee Thomas and a three-run blast by Antonio Valdez -- gave UIW a 9-0 advantage.
 
Central Arkansas plated a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 9-2, in favor of UIW, but the Cardinals responded in the bottom of the frame. Smith hit his second home run of the game, extending the lead to 10-2 before the game was delayed in the sixth frame.
 
Resuming the game in the bottom of the sixth with a runner on first and no outs, the Cardinals scored two more runs to extend their lead to 12-2. First, R. Gonzalez doubled to drive in Eddy Gonzalez. R. Gonzalez then came home on a wild pitch. 
 
R. Gonzalez blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 14-2, in favor of UIW. The Bears plated four runs in the top of ninth, but the Cardinals secured the 14-6 victory in game one.
