SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team won a back-and-forth battle, 6-5, against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
NOTABLES
- Sean Arnold extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
- Antonio Valdez had a 2-for-3 outing with two RBI.
- Ryan Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
- Bernie Martinez earned the win, recording 5 strikeouts in 2.1 inning pitched. Martinez has a team-leading four wins this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Islanders opened scoring in the top of the second when they took a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the third as
Sean Arnold scored on a
Ryan Flores single to right center field, tying the game 1-1. The Cardinals took their first lead of the game later that inning when
Antonio Valdez used an RBI single to drive in
Jordan Thompson.
The Islanders then knotted the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth, but the Cardinals again had an answer. UIW scored three runs on two hits -- including a sac fly from Valdez and a two-RBI double from
Ryan Gonzalez -- to take the 5-2 lead over the Islanders.
TAMUCC tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh after scoring three runs on three hits. The Cardinals regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth when
Eddy Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch, securing the 6-5 win for UIW.
