SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team hit three home runs, but the Cardinals fell, 11-6, to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
NOTABLES
- Taylor Smith went 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI. This is the second game this season where Smith has recorded two home runs.
- Sean Arnold extended his hitting streak to 11 games. He had a 2-for-6 outing and scored a run.
- Lee Thomas was 2-for-5, including a home run and two RBI.
- Ryan Gonzalez and Jordan Thompson each had 2-for-5 outings, including a double apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals opened scoring in the bottom of second. Ryan Gonzalez scored as Lee Thomas singled through the right side, giving UIW the 1-0 lead. The Islanders quickly responded in the top of the third, plating three runs on three hits to take the 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third frame, Smith and Thomas each hit a solo home run to tie the game at 3-3. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi then used a grand slam to take a 7-3 lead in the top of the fifth.
The Islanders extended their lead to 11-3, scattering four runs across the seventh and eighth innings. Smith hit his second home run of the game -- a three-run blast to left field -- in the eighth inning, but TAMUCC secured the 11-6 win.
