SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team beat the University of Massachusetts in convincing fashion, 19-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
NOTABLES
- Sean Arnold extended his hitting streak to 12 games. He went 2-for-5, recording his first home run of the season.
- Chance Medina had a 3-for-5 outing, hitting the two-RBI double in the bottom of the fourth that gave the Cardinals the lead.
- Taylor Smith hit his conference-leading sixth and seventh home runs of the season, a three-run blast in the bottom of the fourth as well as a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth.
- Antonio Valdez went 3-for-5, including two doubles and two runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals opened scoring in the bottom of the first. Smith and Valdez scored on a
Ryan Gonzalez triple to give UIW the 2-0 lead. The Minutemen responded in the top of the third, scoring three runs to take a 3-2 lead.
The Cardinals then tied the game up in the bottom of the third when Arnold hit a solo home run to left field to make the score 3-3.
UIW took the 9-3 advantage in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs on a
Chance Medina two-RBI double, a
Tyler Pettit RBI single and a three-run home run by Smith.
The Cardinals extended their lead to 10-3 in the bottom of the seventh when
Ryan Flores singled to drive in Valdez. The Minutemen scored a run in the top of eighth to make the score 10-4 in favor of UIW.
The Cardinals tacked on nine more runs in the bottom of the eighth frame to secure the 19-4 victory.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals travel to Huntsville, Texas, to play a three-game conference series against Sam Houston State. The series begins on Friday at 6:30 p.m. (CT) at Don Sanders Baseball Stadium.
