Baseball beats UT-Arlington, 6-2

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team closed out its three-game series against UT-Arlington with a 6-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Daniel Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
 
NOTABLES
  • Taylor Smith had a perfect 4-for-4 outing with two RBI.
  • Ryan Gonzalez recorded three hits, while Shea Gutierrez and Sean Arnold each amassed two hits.
  • Jordan Thompson tallied his first sacrifice fly of the season in the sixth inning. As a team, UIW now has 12 sacrifice flies in 12 games.
  • Aaron Celestino earned the win, striking out four and allowing only two runs over 5.0 innings.
  • Bernie Martinez received the save. He pitched 3.1 innings in relief, striking out four and holding the Mavericks scoreless.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mavericks opened scoring in the top of the second, plating two runs to take the lead, but the Cardinals responded. UIW exploded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on six hits to take a 4-2 lead over UT-Arlington. 
 
The Cardinals added another run in the fifth frame when Taylor Smith singled to bring home Antonio Valdez, extending the lead to 5-2. UIW tacked on another run in the sixth inning with a Jordan Thompson sacrifice fly that scored Sean Arnold and secured a 6-2 win for the Cardinals.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals travel to San Marcos, Texas, for a mid-week matchup against Texas State on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. (CT) at Bobcat Ballpark.
