Cardinals hit the road for battle with Texas State

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS -- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team returns to action Wednesday to take on the Texas State Bobcats at 2 p.m. (CT) at Bobcat Softball Stadium.

THE OPENING PITCH
The Cardinals (2-18, 0-3 SLC) are coming off a series loss against McNeese State and are looking to get back in the win column against Texas State (11-15, 2-4 Sun Belt).

SOBOLEWSKI'S STREAK
  • Senior first baseman Hope Sobolewski went 2-3 in her last game at McNeese, her third multi-hit game in the last five outings.
  • She now leads the team with a .261 batting average, six RBIs and a .435 slugging percentage. Over the last two weeks, she's batting .428.
  • She is hitting .667 (6-9) at home this season with four RBIs, including a walkoff two-RBI single to win the second game of last week's doubleheader against TSU.
  • Her four hits in the win were a career high.

MAKING THEM EARN IT
  • Brett Coleman pitched her eighth complete game of the season against McNeese State on Sunday, tossing six innings and surrendering no earned runs on a season-low two hits with three strikeouts.
  • The sophomore now leads the team in innings pitched (57.2) and strikeouts (34).
  • She's held opponents to two or fewer earned runs in five out of the last seven contests.

HOFFMAN EMERGES VICTORIOUS
  • In the second game of the doubleheader against Texas Southern two weeks ago, freshman pitcher Renee Hoffman threw a complete game, pitching a total of eight innings and surrendering just three earned runs on eight hits, picking up the first win of her college career.
  • Hoffman struck out six batters in the outing, tying her season high. She now leads the team in opposing batting average (.282).
  • In the same game, the freshman also produced at the plate. She finished 1-4 with a run scored, helping her own cause as she lifted the Cardinals to victory.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
The Bobcats are coming off a 2-1 series win over conference opponent South Alabama, ending their five-game losing streak. Junior outfielder Christiana McDowell leads the Bobcats at the plate with a .427 batting average, four doubles, three home runs and 13 RBIs. In the circle, Texas State has four different pitchers who have made five or more appearances. Sophomore Meagan King and junior Dalilah Barrera are the primary starters, boasting a 4.44 and 4.75 ERA, respectively.
