HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team used strong pitching and solid offense to secure an 8-2 victory over Sam Houston State on Saturday afternoon in Huntsville, Texas, at Don Sanders Baseball Stadium. With the win, the Cardinals evened the series, 1-1.
NOTABLES
- Tyler Miller (2-3) earned the win, holding the Bearkats to two runs on five hits while striking out three batters in 5.0 innings pitched.
- Bernie Martinez earned his second save of the season, striking out three batters in 3.0 innings pitched.
- Taylor Smith paced the team. He had a 3-for-4 contest, including two doubles, two RBI and two runs.
- Jordan Thompson had two hits with a home run, two RBI and two runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead.
Eddy Gonzalez scored on a
Taylor Smith double to give UIW the 1-0 lead before the Bearkats plated a run and tied the game in the bottom of the third.
SHSU then took a brief, 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the fifth before the Cardinals exploded for four runs in the top of the sixth. UIW took a 5-2 lead with an
Antonio Valdez RBI triple, a Smith RBI double, and a two-run home run by
Jordan Thompson.
The Cardinals extended their lead again with a single run in the seventh frame when
Ryan Gonzalez used a sacrifice fly to bring home Valdez.
UIW added two more runs in the top of the ninth.
Ridge Rogers doubled to drive in Smith and Thompson, securing the 8-2 victory over the Bearkats.
