Shorthanded Cardinals fall to Lumberjacks

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team, limited to eight players because of injuries, played defending Southland Conference tournament champion Stephen F. Austin evenly for the first ten minutes on Saturday afternoon, but eventually succumbed, 81-54.

NOTABLES
  • Augustine Ene scored 17 points and Antoine Smith Jr.12 for the Cardinals.
  • SFA improved to 14-12 on the season and 7-7 in conference play. UIW is now 6-21 and 1-12. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
  • UIW started Smith, Cody Graham, Jordan Caruso, Jorden Kite and Christian Peevy.
  • UIW drew first blood on Christian Peevy's driving layup.
  • The Cardinals held SFA scoreless for the first two and one-half minutes.
  • SFA took a 6-5 lead into the first media timeout at 15:54. Peevy's layup and Kite's three pointer from the corner accounted for UIW's points.
  • Ene's two free throws, followed by a layup at 13:30, gave UIW an 11-10 lead.
  • After SFA went on an 8-0 run, Graham's jumper made the score 18-13 with 9:54 left.
  • Ene's three pointer made the score 21-16, SFA, with 9:06 left.
  • From that point, SFA went on a 20-8 run to take a 41-24 halftime lead.
  • Ene earned half of those points, 12.
  • Playing with only eight uniformed players because of injuries, UIW had two players with three fouls, Smith and Peevy, by halftime.
  • SFA shot 60.9 percent in the first half; UIW hit 40 percent. 
Second Half:
  • Smith's hook shot and follow-on free throw cut the Lumberjacks' lead to 17 at 18:35.
  • Graham contributed a three-point play, a layup and free throw, at 16:43.
  • Smith's three pointer cut the Lumberjacks' lead to 46-33 at 16:15.
  • SFA regained its 20-point lead at 11:55.
  • Peevy fouled out at 10:30, leaving seven Cardinals available to play.
  • SFA opened up a 30-point lead at 8:03.

UIW journeys to Natchitoches, Louisiana for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Wednesday against Northwestern State.
