Cardinals lead, then fall to Demons

NATCHITOCHES, La.  -- The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team led Northwestern State University by as many as 11 points, but the Demons went on several runs in the second half to win a Southland Conference game, 68-60, on Wednesday night at Prather Coliseum.
 
UIW led by seven points, 47-40,with 11:34 left in the game, but NSU went on a 10-0 run during the next four minutes and 20 seconds to take a three-point lead. Then, in the last 6:45 of the game, the Demons outscored the Cardinals, 18-10, to win the game.
 
Northwestern State improved to 11-17 overall and 6-9 in the SLC. UIW fell to 6-22 and 1-14.
 
NOTABLES HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
  • UIW started Smith, Ene, Peevy, Dwight Murray Jr. and Cody Graham.
  • UIW got out to a 4-3 lead on baskets by Peevy and Murray -- and then Smith hit a three pointer at 16:40 to make the score 7-3.
  • UIW took a 10-5 lead on a basket and follow-on free throw by Peevy at 14:25.

UIW returns to the McDermott center on Saturday for the last game of the year, a 7 p.m. tipoff against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. It will be Senior Night.
