SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team lost a 76-58 Southland Conference game to Lamar University on Wednesday night.
UIW is now 6-20 overall and 1-12 in conference play. Lamar improved to 15-12 and 8-6.
NOTABLES
- Lamar hit seven three-point shots; UIW had three.
- Christian Peevy had 12 points and Dwight Murray had 10 for UIW.
- UIW protected its leadership among 351 Division I teams with regard to free throw percentage, hitting 13 of 15 attempts from the foul line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
- UIW started Augustine Ene, Charles Brown III, Bryce Davis, Cody Graham and Peevy.
- Lamar took a 6-4 lead into the first timeout at 14:55. A jumper by Peevy and two free throws by Romello Wilbert accounted for the UIW scoring.
- LU held a 9-8 lead at the second media timeout at 12:32.
- LU achieved two ten-point leads, at the 7:56 and 7:00 marks on the clock.
- On two occasions, 5:10 and 4:26, the Cardinals cut those leads to four points -- on baskets by Brown and Wilbert.
- In the waning minutes of the first half, Lamar built two 14-point leads.
- A three-point play with six seconds left in the half, a layup by Peevy with his follow-on free throw, cut the LU lead to 10.
- A last-second layup gave LU a 40-28 halftime lead.
- Peevy scored eight points. Brown and Wilbert scored six each.
- Lamar hit five three-pointers in the half. UIW had one.
Second Half:
- A three-point play by Wilbert, a bucket and free throw, followed by Cody Graham's layup, kept UIW in contention to begin the second half.
- LU took a 15-point lead, 48-33, with 16:37 remaining.
- Peevy's two free throws cut the margin to 11 with 14:35 left.
- Ene's two free throws at 13:22 cut the Lamar lead to nine, 50-41.
- LU took a 19-point lead at 11:14, courtesy of a consecutive layup and a three-pointer.
- Lamar led by as many as 24 (at 5:34) over the last ten minutes of the game, but Dwight Murray's jumper cut the final margin to 18.
