SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team secured the series win against Hofstra with an 11-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field sponsored by H-E-B.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the bottom of the second,
Ryan Flores doubled to left center to score
Taylor Smith.
Sean Arnold then grounded out to shortstop to bring
Antonio Valdez home as UIW took a 2-0 lead after two innings.
The Cardinals tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the third.
Kyle Bergeron scored on a wild pitch, Valdez hit a sacrifice fly to drive
Eddy Gonzalez in, Flores brought home Smith with a sacrifice fly, and Arnold hit a double along the third base line to send
Ryan Gonzalez home. The four runs gave UIW a 6-0 advantage.
UIW added more insurance in the bottom of the fourth. E. Gonzalez hit a single to drive in
Jordan Thompson. E. Gonzalez then scored off a Valdez sacrifice fly to right field as the Cardinals extended their advantage to 8-0.
UIW carried its momentum to the bottom of the fifth. Thompson was hit by pitch, allowing R. Gonzalez to score. Arnold then came home on a double play, making it a 10-0 game.
Hofstra scored a run in the top of the seventh, but the 10-1 score still favored UIW.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Shea Gutierrez scored after
Tyler Pettit reached first on an error to secure the 11-1 win for UIW.
NOTABLES
- Aaron Celestino recorded five strikeouts while pitching five shutout innings.
- Sean Arnold paced the team with a 2-for-4 outing, including a double, two RBI and a run.
- Ryan Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with two runs.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals take part in the annual Alamo Irish Classic tournament against Notre Dame and Eastern Michigan at Wolff Stadium on Feb. 21-24. The tournament includes two matchups against Eastern Michigan and two matchups against Notre Dame.
