Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

UIW falls on the road to Washington State, 87-59

PULLMAN, Wash. – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team dropped its final nonconference game of the season, 87-59, against Power-5 opponent Washington State on Saturday in Beasley Coliseum.

NOTABLES
  • Freshman forward Vincent Miszkiewicz had a solid all-around game despite going up against much bigger competition, posting eight points with eight rebounds and a block. This was the seventh game of the season where Miszkiewicz recorded eight or more rebounds.
  • Sophomore guard Dwight Murray Jr. tied for a team-high 10 points, grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out three assists in another productive night.
  • Freshman guard Drew Lutz scored in double-figures for the sixth time this season, finishing with 10 points while tallying three assists and two steals.
  • Freshman center Marcus Larsson recorded a career-high four steals to go along with six points and three rebounds.
  • The Cardinals forced 18 turnovers for a +4 turnover margin.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF

Washington State opened the game on an 11-2 scoring run, but UIW caught fire from behind the arc to go on an 11-4 run, reducing the deficit to 17-16 midway through the first half. The Cougars finished the half on a 24-10 run as the Cardinals struggled to find the bottom of the net offensively. The Cardinals forced eight turnovers in the half, a stat that ultimately proved benign for the Cougar offense, which shot 56.3 percent from the floor and 71.4 percent from three. Despite the Cougar mistakes and the strong shooting start from outside by Willis and junior forward Augustine Ene (two made 3-pointers each), UIW went into the break trailing WSU 46-27.

SECOND HALF
Miszkiewicz put the first four points of the half on the board for UIW and went on to score all eight of his points in the second period. The Cardinals went on a 9-3 run capped off by a 3-pointer from Lutz on the right wing, cutting the UIW deficit to 59-44 about midway through the second half. Larsson and Miszkiewicz continued to cause problems for the Cougars in the paint, scoring the Cardinals' next six points as UIW tried to put together a late rally. WSU proved too difficult to guard, however, and effectively sealed the game with a 9-0 run to extend its lead to 77-50 with under five minutes left to play. Murray Jr. connected on a pair of layups with under three minutes left in the game, but the Cougars came away with a comfortable 87-59 victory at home.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals will finish off their three-game road trip with a conference battle against Nicholls at 7 p.m. (CT) Thursday, January 2, at Stopher Gymnasium in Thibodaux, La.
