COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team was led by freshman guard Drew Lutz's team-high 16 points in Wednesday night's 82-42 loss against Southeastern Conference contender Missouri. Lutz set the record for most points scored by a freshman in their first game since UIW moved to Division I in 2013-14.
NOTABLES
-
Lutz's 16 points matched Missouri's Jeremiah Tilmon for the most points scored in the game.
-
Sophomore guard Morgan Taylor contributed in a variety of ways, scoring four points and grabbing six rebounds to go with a team-high two assists and two steals.
-
Freshman center Marcus Larsson started his first collegiate game and was second on the team in scoring with five points and three rebounds.
-
UIW's three-point defense was outstanding, holding Missouri to just 22.6 percent shooting from behind the arc.
The Tigers took an early lead and led the rest of the game. The Cardinals battled hard and cut the Missouri lead to just one multiple times during the first half, but the Power 5 team proved too strong.
Despite the uneven score, the Cardinals showed flashes of potential against what will likely be the toughest team they face all season. UIW leaned on its talented freshmen throughout the night, with Lutz pacing the team in both field goals made (six) and attempted (17), while Vincent Miszkiewicz pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds in his first collegiate action.
"Gotta tip the proverbial cap to Missouri - their defensive pressure and sheer size is a lot to deal with," Cardinal head coach Carson Cunningham said. "Coach Martin does a great job with his squad. This game should help us sharpen up. We have a tough challenge Friday with Northern Colorado, which has been in the upper echelon of the Big Sky for a couple of years now. So, while we learn from this one, we need to recharge too."
UP NEXT
UIW will hop back on the plane and head to Greeley, Colorado, for a matchup against the Northern Colorado Bears at 9 p.m. (CT) Friday, November 8.
