NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The University of the Incarnate Word men and women's swimming teams topped Loyola New Orleans, 382-123, in their contest on Tuesday. The women scored 190 points while the men finished with 192.
CARDINALS RESULTS
The Cardinals opened the day taking first and second in the women's 200 Medley relay, with
Natasha Fung,
Cassandra Phillips,
Mariana Ruvalcaba Cruz and
Kaylee Brawner finishing first in 1:46.26. The men also took first and third in their event, with the top marks going to
Aaron Moran,
Bryce Kuchan,
Oleksandr Karpenko and
Carter Wallace with a time of 1:34.49.
Hannah Rowley dominated the women's 1,000 freestyle competition with a finals time of 10:34.00.
Oscar Cardenas also found huge success in the men's 1,000 freestyle, finishing in 9:58.39. Teammate
Alex Garriga came in with a finals time of 10:14.49.
UIW women and men snagged all the top spots in the 200 Freestyle competitions. On the women's side, it was
Hailey Miller who ruled with a finishing time of 1:56.29. Miller later took first in the women's 200 Backstroke with a time of 2:08.12.
For the men's 200 Freestyle,
Vladyslav Chumak took gold with a time of 1:43.04.
Leonardo Sanchez and
Carter Wallace touched the wall just after Chumak, finishing 0.24 and 0.36 seconds after, respectively.
Natasha Fung soared in the 100 Backstroke, taking first with a time of 58.77. For the men,
Aaron Moran came first in 51.53, while H. Ruvalcaba Cruz finished just after in 51.62. In the men's 200 Backstroke, Moran took the top spot with a finals time of 1:53.88, followed closely by
Beau Fusilier with a time of 1:57.01.
Mariana Ruvalcaba Cruz took first in the women's 100 Breaststroke with a finals time of 1:06.49. Alexandra Farmer came in afterwards with a time of 1:09.99.
Oleksandr Karpenko won first in the men's 100 and 200 Breaststroke, finishing in 57.98 (100 yards) and 2:06.34 (200 yards). Karpenko was accompanied by teammates who took second in both finishes, with
Jon Taylor posting a time of 59.86 in the 100 and H. Ruvalcaba Cruz finishing in 2:10.87 in the 200.
Underclassmen
Cassandra Phillips and
Peyton Roemer came first in the women's 200 Butterfly with respective times of 2:10.03 and 2:10.64. Phillips captured first again later in the women's 100 Butterfly, going 56.38.
Bryce Kuchan topped the men's competition, taking first in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 1:52.97.
Taylor Steele and Roemer took the top spots in the women's 500 Freestyle, taking first and second with times of 5:18.12 and 5:19.92, respectively.
For the men's 500 Freestyle, UIW snagged all the winning spots with Sanchez taking first with a time of 4:44.42. In the men's 100 Freestyle,
Carter Wallace took first with a time of 46.45.
Kaylee Brawner took first in the women's 50-yard Freestyle with a finals time of 24.79. She later went on to take second in the women's 100 Freestyle with a time of 55.50.
Magda Vega Vidal was the one to top the competition in the 100 Freestyle, finishing in 54.39.
Freshman
Natalia Macias Ruiz proved to be a powerful force in the women's 200 Breaststroke, finishing seconds faster than her opponents with a time of 2:32.45.
Again taking all the top ranks, UIW showed out in the competition day's final relays, taking first and second on the men and women's side of the 400 Freestyle relays. For the women, the top spot was comprised of Cardinals Miller, Rowley, Vega Vidal and Brawner, who finished in a time of 3:39.28. The men's relay top finisher touched in 3:08.47, and was swam by Sanchez,
Christopher Lestage, C. Wallace and
Norbert Aranyi.

The Cardinal men's and women's teams continue on the road to face Florida State University Jan. 10. Diving competition is set to begin at 10 a.m. (ET), while swimming events will be at 2 p.m. (ET) in Tallahassee.
