SAN ANTONIO – When Allison Howarth became the head coach of the University of the Incarnate Word's women's golf team in June, she stated a team goal of "becoming competitive in every tournament we play."
 
With the release of the Cardinals' 2018-19 fall and spring schedules, Howarth revealed her strategy for reaching that objective. UIW will compete against top-flight opponents, but will do so on courses that are familiar to its golfers.
 
Although UIW begins its season with the Hobble Creek Fall Classic in Springville, Utah, on Sept. 11, the remainder of the regular season's competition occurs in Texas.
 
"The girls will be playing in a lot of familiar tournaments with golf courses a lot of them have played before," said Howarth. "It's a great opportunity for us to take advantage of the experience we have on those golf courses."
 
Nevertheless, Howarth has insured that her golfers will be challenged by the quality of competition. She cites the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational, hosted by crosstown rival UTSA at TCP San Antonio on Oct. 14-16, as the kind of tournament that will whet her players' competitive instincts.
 
"Every tournament brings its own challenges, but we will be participating in the UTSA event that is known to have a strong field," she said. "We are looking forward to playing against some great teams at one of the best golf courses in the state of Texas."
 
The regular season's eight tournaments are divided evenly, with four each in the fall and spring. Then, the Southland Conference Tournament takes place on another course familiar to UIW's golfers, High Meadow Ranch Golf Club in Magnolia, Texas, on April 15-17.
