FRISCO, Texas – University of the Incarnate Word junior shortstop Ryan Gonzales was named Preseason Second Team All-Southland Conference, the league announced Tuesday.
 
"I've only been around Ryan for six months, but it's no surprise that he was recognized by the league," Head Coach Patrick Hallmark said. "The honor is well deserved. Our only concern is keeping Ryan healthy. He is a terrific player and great teammate."
 
A native of Corpus Christi, Gonzales made 26 starts in 2017, batting .271 on the year. He registered 26 hits, drove in 14 runs and scored 12 more. Gonzales drew 11 walks, notched 3 triples, 1 double and 1 home run over his sophomore campaign. On the base paths, he successfully stole 4 bases in 6 attempts.
 
Gonzales was a vacuum from the shortstop position, committing only 6 errors, while helping to generate 19 double plays. He finished the season with a .954 fielding percentage.

For the first time in program history, UIW is eligible for NCAA Division I postseason play after completing a four-year transition to full NCAA Division I status.
