Cardinals Clash with Lumberjacks Saturday on ESPN3

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball closes a a two-game road trip at Stephen F. Austin on Saturday at 6 p.m. on ESPN3.
 
FIRST TIP
 
SFA leads the all-time series, 6-1, but UIW split last season's series, as Shawn Johnson swished a corner three at the buzzer to give the Cardinals a 70-68 victory on Jan. 21, 2017, in the McDermott Center.
 
UIW and SFA have played one common Southland opponent so far in Nicholls: the Lumberjacks defeated Nicholls, 81-64, on Jan. 3, while the Colonels knocked off the Cardinals, 77-60, on Dec. 30.

Summary: After starting conference play with a loss to league leader, Southeastern Louisiana, SFA has won three straight, the most recent knocking reigning conference champions, New Orleans, from the unbeatens, 78-68, Wednesday in Nacogdoches behind 23 points from Ivan Canete.
 
Kevon Harris may lead the Lumberjacks in scoring (16.6), but it's the TJ Holyfield show, as he leads the team in rebounding (6.9), blocks (20), shooting (58.4), 3-point shooting (47.5), and free-throws (80.7). His 15.2 points per game are second most on the team. Canete is the big assist leader, with 52 helpers to his name. As a team, the Lumberjacks lead the conference in steals (11.3/gm), scoring margin (+13.3), field-goal percentage (49.0), and second in rebounding margin (+4.1).

Summary: Central Arkansas' Jordan Howard scored a program Division I record 41 points Wednesday night, squandering the career-high 24 points from Christian Peevy and the career-tying 24 points from Charles Brown III in the Bears' 92-76 win over UIW. Twenty-two of Howard's 41 points came in the first half. With his four blocks Wednesday, Shawn Johnson passed Denzel Livingston for second in program history with 130. UIW was without the services of Jalin Hart, Simi Socks, and Keaton Hervey against the Bears.
 
On the season, Brown III leads the Cardinals with 12.7 points per game, followed by Peevy's 12.0. Socks is third with 11.8. On the glass, Johnson is tops with 6.6 rebounds per game, and also leads in blocks (24) and steals (28), while his 28 helpers trail Hart's 43. Sam Burmeister's 40.0 three-point percentage leads the Cardinals. As a team, UIW leads the conference in blocks (5.1/gm) and free throw percentage (74.0), is 10th in scoring margin (-3.1), and is 12th in rebounding margin (-3.6).
