SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team suffered a three set defeat by Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the McDermott Convocation center. The Cardinals are now 2-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Madison Woods contributed two service aces to open the set for an early 2-0 Islander lead. The Cardinals soon responded to take a 3-2 advantage over A&M Corpus and lead through much of the first set. The Islanders went on a six point streak to even up the score 15-15. A&M Corpus finished off the set on a five point streak to beat the Cardinals 25-23.
Set two started off in favor of the Islanders as the team led 5-1. UIW fought back to tie the score 7-7, but the Islanders soon got their attack going again leaving the Cardinals to trail through the rest of the second. The Islanders took set two 25-22.
Much like the first two sets, the Cardinals played from behind. The squad was able to catch up to A&M Corpus at 13-13 to pressure the defending conference champions into a timeout. The teams battled back and forth in the final set, but the Islanders came out on top for a 27-25 success and match victory.
LEADERS
Bryaunea Hall led UIW both offensively and defensively registering 10 kills and two blocks.
Sarea Alexander contributed nine kills for a .500 attacking percentage.
Madison Williams paced the team with 32 assists and tallied 11 digs.
Madelynn Miller had 15 digs.
Madison Green led the Islanders with 15 kills and Brittany Gilpin followed with eight.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals will return to the McDermott Convocation Center to host McNeese on Thursday, Sept. 28. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
