NATCHITOCHES, La. – Northwestern State used the momentum from Saturday's walk-off winner to roll past the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team 11-1 in game three of the Southland Conference series on Sunday afternoon at Brown-Stroud Field to win the series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Demons (18-28, 8-16 SLC) came out ready to play for game three. They scored the first run of the game in the second inning, and never looked back. They benefitted from a perfect 4-for-4 day from David Fry, who also walked, drove in two runs and scored twice.
The Demons then put up three runs in the third inning and added four more in the fourth. The Cardinals (19-29, 7-17 SLC) used a
Garrett Terrell single in the top of the fourth to score their only run of the ballgame. But the pitching of the Demons' Cullen McDonald took care of the rest. He quieted the Cardinal bats, tossing eight innings of one run baseball, scattering four hits, no walks, one run, and striking out three to pick up the win. Due to the game being on getaway day, the game was called after eight innings due to the 10-run rule, giving McDonald a complete game on the mound.
Tyler Lesley absorbed the loss for UIW, while
Jenner Jackson was the only Cardinal with a scoreless outing. He pitched two innings without allowing a run.
LEADERS
David Anaya collected two of UIW's four hits.
Sean Arnold had a single, and Terrell had the RBI-single. Those four hits were the only baserunners of the day for the Cardinals.
For the Demons, Fry had the four hits, two walks, two RBI, and two runs, while Austin Townsend drove in three runs. Hunter Uzzle had two hits, two RBI and also scored a run. Matthew Alford was only 1-for-1 with a double, but got on base four times as he drew three walks and also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
