CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team heads South in their first trip to Corpus Christi as the Cardinals take on Texas A&M – CC in the final Southland Conference series of the season starting on Friday at 1:00 p.m.
Scouting UIW
The Cardinals took a doubleheader from visiting Texas Southern on Wednesday by scores of 5-1 and 8-1.
Mikaela Flores went 4-for-7 with three RBI in the two games, while
Monica Flores hit a two-run home run in game two and
Joanna Valencia pitched a complete-game three-hitter in game one.
On the season,
Danielle Ramirez is 8th in the Southland with a .352 batting average, going 43-for-121 with four triples, six RBI, and 13 runs scored. Mi. Flores leads the Cardinals with 13 doubles and 25 RBI. Her 13 two-baggers and 0.26 doubles per game are just shy of the Top 50 in the NCAA Division I. In the circle, Valencia is 33rd in the SLC with a 4.03 ERA, the second-lowest among freshmen.
Sarah Leal, who is second with a 6.11 ERA, is T-13th with seven complete games, while Valencia follows with six, sharing 18th in the conference. The duo combine for 96 of the team's 145 strikeouts. As a team, the Cardinals are 9th in the SLC with a .247 batting average and last with a 5.85 ERA.

The Islanders have lost four in a row after dropping a three-game series at Nicholls and a 3-0 defeat at Texas on Wednesday. Mackinzee Griebel leads the team with a .315 batting average, going 40-for-127 at the plate with two doubles, eight RBI, and 10 runs. Four different Islanders have hit two home runs each. Liz Carter, the star pitcher for the Islanders, has helped herself at the plate with a team-best 13 RBI. Carter has suffered with little run support - TAMUCC averages 1.9 runs per game - but has a 3.56 ERA, going 9-18 with 24 complete games, five shutouts, and 158 strikeouts. The other pitcher for the Islanders is Kandace Johnson, who is 2-16 with a 4.76 ERA, 12 complete games, and 42 strikeouts. As a team, the Islanders are last in the SLC with a .211 batting average and 11th with a 3.99 ERA.
