SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The UIW softball team closes the home portion of the 2017 schedule with a non-conference doubleheader against Texas Southern on Wednesday, May 3. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. from the Cardinal Softball Field.

Scouting UIW
The Cardinals were swept in a Southland Conference series by Lamar over the weekend.

On the season, Danielle Ramirez is in the Top 10 in the conference with a .356 batting average, going 42-for-118 with four triples, six RBI, and 13 runs scored. Alex Alonzo posts a .321 average with five doubles, one home run, 15 RBI, and 34 runs scored. Mikaela Flores, who is batting .276, leads the team with 22 RBI and 11 doubles. In the circle, Joanna Valencia is 5-8 with 14 starts, six complete games, and 47 strikeouts. As a team, UIW is ranked 9th in the SLC with a .241 batting average and last with a 6.20 ERA.

Scouting Texas Southern
The Lady Tigers clinched the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) by taking two of three from Grambling State, 11-1, 3-4, and 11-3.

TSU has five players batting .300 or better, led by Jocilynn Ellis with a .367 average, going 29-for-79 at the plate. Madilynn Marek is hitting .36 with 30 hits, eight doubles, two home runs, 20 RBI, and 12 runs scored. Chanler Powell, who is batting .341, leads the team with 22 RBI, and her 10 doubles are tied with Dominique Tello (.317, 21 RBI). In the circle, the pitching staff has a combined 2.27 ERA, led by the two-headed monster of Lauren Rodriguez (8-4, 1.64 ERA, 84 strikeouts) and Jasmin Fulmore (9-3, 1.86 ERA, 77 strikeouts). The duo have 161 of the team's 184 strikeouts. As a team, the Lady Tigers are 6th in the SWAC with a .282 ERA and leads the SWAC in ERA.

The all-time series is knotted at four-apiece, with TSU winning three of the last four meetings.

Following the games, the Cardinals close the season with a three-game Southland Conference series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday and Saturday.
