SAN ANTONIO—Houston Baptist's Christian Thames tossed a complete game shutout to hand the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team a 6-0 defeat in game two of the Southland Conference set on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Huskies (19-15, 11-6 SLC) took an early lead in the first inning with three runs and never looked back. The three runs came against UIW's
Bernie Martinez, who after giving up the three runs, would settle in nicely to go without any further damage into the seventh inning.
The Cardinals (16-23, 5-12 SLC) missed plenty of opportunities to score, but left seven men on base against the lefty Thames. In the fifth inning, they had runners on first and second with no outs, but were unable to move the runners on a flyball to centerfield and a groundball to first to end the threat.
The UIW bullpen kept them in the game, keeping HBU scoreless seven innings before allowing three insurance runs in the top of the ninth.
Cody Allen,
Ramon Salazar and
Cody Richey combined to thrown 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball.
In the eighth inning, the Cardinals started a rally with two singles to start the fram from
Eddy Gonzalez and
Nico Garza, but Thames would retire the next three Cardinals to stop the rally.
The three ninth inning runs for the Huskies came against UIW's closer
Lance Moszkowicz, who allowed three runs on four hits in 0.2 innings.
With the win, Thames improved to 6-1, while Martinez fell to 3-3 on the season.
LEADERS
Mark Whitehead was the only Cardinal with multiple hits. He finished the ballgame two-for-four, while
Lee Thomas reached base twice with a single and a walk.
For the Huskies, Jake Pulcheon led the way with two hits, three RBI, a walk, a double, and a run scored. Kendrick Holmes collected three hits and stole two bases.
