THIBODAUX, La. – With the score tied 4-4,
Garrett Terrell hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning to give the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team a 5-4 Southland Conference win in game two of the series over Nicholls, on Friday night at Ray E. Didier Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals (16-19, 5-9 SLC) started the game with four straight hits to take an early 2-0 lead, in what proved to be a back-and-forth game. The Colonels (19-18, 6-8 SLC) answered back in the bottom of the third with two runs to even the score at two. Then in the following inning, Nicholls grabbed a 3-2 lead with a sac fly to centerfield.
UIW didn't waste much time and took the lead back in the fifth.
Kyler Genenbacher singled in
Mark Whitehead and
David Anaya then scored on a wild pitch to take a 4-3 lead. Then in the sixth, Nicholls used a Cardinal throwing error to score the tying run.
UIW used terrific pitching from the bullpen after that. Garret Cooper,
Cody Allen, and
Lance Moszkowicz kept Nicholls off the board for the last three innings.
Then in the top of the ninth, Terrell hit a 3-2 pitch through the left side to drive in the go-ahead run. That run would be enough, as the UIW closer, Moszkowicz, came in and retired the ninth in order, for the Cardinals' fifth conference win of the season and his fifth save of the year.
Cody Allen moved to 3-0 after picking up the win, while Adam Tarver got tabbed with the loss for the Colonels.
LEADERS
The Cardinals had four hitters with a multi-hit game. Whitehead, Anaya, Genenbacher and
Bryce Shepherd all collected two hits. Genenbacher also added two RBI, while Anaya scored twice and drove in another. The UIW starter
Bernie Martinez took a no decision after allowing three unearned runs in six innings of work.
For Nicholls, Kyle Knauth led the way with three hits, and Joey Morales and Juan Givan each collected two hits,
