SAN ANTONIO – An offensive surge by Stephen F. Austin handed the University of the Incarnate Word two Southland Conference losses, 21-8, and 22-3, on Friday evening at Sullivan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lumberjacks came to San Antonio ready to hit. In the two games combined, they collected 47 hits, scored 43 runs, and hit four homeruns. The Cardinals (13-15, 4-7 SLC) never led during the day, dropping the first two games of the conference series.
In game one, SFA used a 10-run second inning to set the tone for the afternoon. SFA pitcher, Trevor Kiminski picked up the 'W' despite giving up five earned runs (two unearned) and walking five in 6.2 innings. The Cardinals used five pitchers, and
Jesse Borden was the only UIW reliever to not allow a run. He retired all three batters he faced in the ninth inning.
Luke Taggart got tagged with the loss in his first conference start in his college career.
Bryce Shepherd put UIW on the board with his first homerun of the season. The Cardinals offense then scored three runs in the sixth, and then added four more in the seventh to make it 20-8, before SFA scored an insurance run in the top of the eight to make it 21-8.
In game two, SFA didn't let off the pedal. They took a quick 11-0 lead after three innings, and never looked back. UIW scored three runs in the fourth inning when
Garrett Terrell hit an infield single to drive in a run, and a throwing error by the third baseman led to two more unearned runs.
SFA's Patrick Ledet was the winner in game two, after throwing 7.0 innings, allowing five hits and one earned run (two unearned). He walked five and struck out six. For UIW,
Bernie Martinez is the losing pitcher, which is his first loss of the season and is now 3-1.
