SAN ANTONIO – The strong offensive performance continued for Stephen F. Austin as they completed the three-game Southland Conference sweep of the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team with a 19-6 seven-inning run-rule final in game three at Sullivan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After combining for 43 runs and 47 hits in the first two games of the series, the Lumberjacks (17-13, 6-3 SLC) scored 19 runs on 19 hits in Saturday's finale. They jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and then went on to score 17 runs in the next three frames.
The Cardinals (13-16, 4-8 SLC) cut it to 2-1 in the bottom of the first on a
Kyler Genenbacher RBI single to right field.
Mark Whitehead drove in two runs with a single to right in the second inning, and another run came in to score on a throwing error. The three runs made it 7-4 at the time. But the Lumberjacks once again used a 10-run inning for the third consecutive game to widen their lead to 19-5 with three two-run homers in the frame.
Jenner Jackson and
Lance Moszkowicz did a great job of keeping the hot 'Jacks bat quiet in the lst three innings. Jackson tossed 2.1 scoreless innings and struck out three, while Moszkowicz threw a scoreless seventh inning and struck out one.
In the bottom of the seventh,
David Anaya hit a deep fly ball to left field that would clear the wall for his second homerun of the season.
Starter
John Shull took the loss in this one, while SFA reliever Will Vest took the win after throwing a scoreless frame and striking out two Cardinals.
LEADERS
Lee Thomas and
Eddy Gonzalez were the only Cardinals with two hits on the afternoon. Whitehead had a hit, a run, and drove in two, while
Tanner White and Genenbacher each drove in a run.
For SFA, Andrew Cole and Josh Evans both finished the ballgame 4-for-4 with two RBI. Zac Michener, Alex Hrinevitch and Evans all homered for the 'Jacks. Nick Ramos had two hits, two runs, and drove in four.
