No. 11 Houston Hands Cardinals 8-1 Loss

HOUSTON – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team kept No. 11 Houston scoreless for the first three innings, but the powerful offense then erupted for eight runs to take an 8-1 non-conference win over the Cardinals on Tuesday evening at Schroeder Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Cardinals' (13-13, 4-5 SLC) Jenner Jackson made his first start of the season and kept the Cougars (19-5) scoreless in his two innings of work. But the Houston offense, led by last week's National Player of the Week, Jake Scheiner, scored six runs in the middle three innings, and later added two in the eighth in the win.

Houston outhit the Cardinals 15-5, and lefthander Trey Cumbie kept the Cardinals in check. He picked up the win after throwing seven scoreless innings, allowing only four hits, one walk, and striking out five. He improved to 4-0 and lowered his already diminutive ERA to 0.74 for the season.

The Cardinals threatened in the eighth inning, but they stranded Ryan Gonzalez on third base. Then in the ninth, David Anaya led off the inning with a walk. After Garrett Terrell doubled to right center, Nico Garza drove in Anaya with a groundball to third base for the lone Cardinal run.

Nolan Ellis gave up a run in an inning of work and got tabbed with the loss. Jesse Borden and Tyler Miller each pitched a scoreless inning in relief, allowing one hit and striking out one.

LEADERS

Terrell led the UIW offense with a 2-for-4 evening including a double, while Anaya walked twice and scored a run. Garza drove in a run, and Sean Arnold, Kyle Bergeron and Ryan Gonzalez all collected a hit.

UP NEXT

The Cardinals will get back home to try to snap their five-game winning streak when they host Stephen F. Austin in a three-game Southland Conference series. Games are slated for Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.

STAY TUNED

Following the weekend series, UIW will host Texas Southern in a non-conference battle on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
