SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis battled until the end against McNeese but dropped the Southland Conference match 5-2 Saturday at the Clarence Mabry Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Cowgirls (9-9, 4-3 SLC) came out strong in doubles, only losing one game in all three matches outscoring UIW 18-1.

In singles, the Cardinals (3-14, 0-5 SLC) had strong play from Matea Zemunik at #1, and Sarah Savedra at #4. Both won their matches in a third-set tiebreaker to give UIW their only points of the day. Savedra fought through in her match and finally pulled out the victory 13-11 in the third set. Maria Batchinsky came back to win the second set 6-4 after losing the first set 6-1, and later lost the tiebreaker 10-7.

UP NEXT

The Cardinals will host Nicholls on Sunday at 10 a.m. for a conference match. Fan appreciation day will be going on at the Clarence Mabry Tennis Center, which will have free food, free drinks and giveaways.

UIW will follow with two road games next weekend. They'll face Louisiana Lafayette in a non-conference game on Friday, March 31 at 3:30 p.m. and a Southland Conference match at Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday April 1 at 12 p.m.
