SAN ANTONIO - Jana Ruzic and
Luciana Paez Hernandez reached the final round of their open doubles division, but the University of the Incarnate Word duo's title ambitions were halted by the elements at the Lilly Kimbell Memorial Women's Tennis Invitational Saturday.
The Cardinal pair was set to play in the championship round of the Women's Open Doubles Blue Division against Paulina Hudson and Zeynep Sila Ege of Texas Wesleyan, but bad weather forced the rest of the event, which was hosted by St. Mary's University, to be canceled.
Ruzic and Hernandez reached the end with a pair of wins Saturday morning. They defeated Selina Wu and Madalyn Smelley of St. Mary's 8-5, then topped Giuliana Giardina and Celine Absawi of UTSA 8-6.
Ruzic also earned a singles win in Flight A Friday, where she topped Smelley 6-2, 3-6, 10-7. Ruzic and Hernandez were the only UIW players to take part in the Kimbell invitational.
Incarnate Word is back in action next week, where it will travel to Houston for the Rice Invitational on Sept. 25-27.
