Ramirez Big Day Cannot Push Cardinals Past McNeese

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, TX – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team produced offensively Friday afternoon, but the Cardinals were unable to hold back fellow Southland Conference foe McNeese during Friday's doubleheader. The Cowgirls (21-11, 8-0) won the first game 15-5 after a big fifth inning, and they took the nightcap 6-4.
 
The Cardinals (5-25, 1-7) started out well in the first game of the day jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first to give the starting pitcher Joanna Valencia an early advantage. However, the Cowgirls scored five runs in the top of the second to gain control of the game.
 
UIW responded well by adding one run in the third and two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the McNeese lead to 6-4. In the fifth, the Cowgirls exploded at the plate tallying nine runs to bust the score open and end the game in five innings.
 
The Cardinals totaled six hits as a team and they were led by Danielle Ramirez who went 3-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Mikaela Flores had one hit and two RBI while Kellen Robles also added an RBI.
 
Justyce McClain led the Cowgirls with four RBI while Morgan Catron added three. Baylee Corbello went the full five innings allowing four earned runs on six hits notching her fifth victory of the season. Valencia is charged with the loss after she gave up eight earned runs on nine hits.
 
In the nightcap, the Cardinals had a season high 13 hits as a team, but they also left 13 runners on base. After McNeese jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, UIW stormed back to tie the ballgame in the bottom of the first.
 
In the second inning, the Cardinals took the lead by scoring two more runs after a single from Flores. The Cowgirls responded with two runs in the top of the third to tie the game and they scored two more in the sixth inning to take a late lead.
 
Alexandra Flores shut down the Cardinals in the bottom of the seventh to earn her seventh win of the season after coming in to start the third inning. Sarah Leal is charged with the loss after going seven innings and allowing six earned runs on 10 hits.
 
Ramirez once again led the Cardinals at the dish with four hits and one run scored. Marcela Lopez added three hits while Flores and Christy Trevino each had two RBI.
