UIW Host McNeese for Weekend Series

SAN ANTONIO, TX – After picking up their first Southland Conference victory of the season, the University of the Incarnate Word softball team will look to add to that total this weekend with a three game series against McNeese starting 4 p.m. on Friday at Cardinals Field. After Friday's double-header, the series concludes on Saturday with a matchup at 12 p.m.
 
Scouting the Cardinals
    
Joanna Valencia scattered six hits and allowed just two earned runs in six innings and Delaney Guzman blasted a three-run home run as UIW won its first conference game, 5-4, at Central Arkansas. The Bears took games one and three by scores of 5-0 and 6-1.
    
 Danielle Ramirez leads the Cardinals (and is 18th in the SLC) with a .338 batting average, going 23-for-68 at the plate with two triples, five runs, and three RBI. Mikaela Flores, who is hitting .247, leads the Cardinals with 10 RBI.
   
  In the circle, Valencia leads the staff with a 4.08 ERA, which is 19th in the conference, as she is 2-4 with 20 walks and 17 strikeouts. Sarah Leal leads the pitchers with 31 strikeouts. As a team, UIW is 11th in the SLC with a .218 team batting average and last with a 5.97 team ERA.
 
Scouting the Cowgirls
    
 McNeese had its seven-game winning streak snapped by Texas, 4-0, Wednesday night, in Austin.
  
   On the season, Erika Piancastelli, the preseason Player of the Year, is 12th in the league with a .356 batting average, going 31-for-87 at the plate. She has 27 runs, 23 RBI, five home runs, three doubles, and is 10-for-11 in stolen bases. Morgan Catron follows with a .350 average, as she leads the team with six home runs and 29 RBI. In the circle, Alexsandra Flores - who was named SLC Pitcher of the Week earlier this season - leads the staff with a 2.21 ERA, going 6-2 with four complete games, and 27 strikeouts compared to 11 walks. Rachel Smith leads the pitchers with 51 whiffs. As a team, the Cowgirls lead the conference with a .297 team batting average and fourth with a 2.91 team ERA.
